If we are to live by the truth and not by lies, then we need to be more honest than we have been. Most conservatives I know are quick to jump at the chance to correct anyone who claims that our government is a democracy. We are a constitutional republic, they say.
But are we?
We have taken our freedom for granted, and we have forgotten that it was only through sacrifice and through war that our independence was ever obtained in the first place. John Adams wasn't simply waxing poetic when he said that, "Liberty, once lost, is lost forever." Forever? Perhaps not. But for certain, liberty surrendered will not be returned to you without the same kind of fight that it took to secure it in the first place.
